| Makinti's work incorporates designs associated with the travels of the "Kungka Kutjarra" (two women), Ancestor figures whose travels covered distances from Pitjantjajara country through to and beyond Hassts Bluff and Papunya. These journeys included numerous ceremonial sites, ceremonial activities and food gathering. Makinti's inspiration for the patterns of her works come from the hairstring skirts which the Pintupi women wear in ceremonial dance. These skirts are woven from human hair and date back to those worn by the "Kungka Kutjarra". While the linier patterns in Makinti's paintings refer to the skirts worn by the women, the flowing rhythms of the lines relate to the songs and dances of the Pintupi's women's ceremonies. |
