Angeline Ngale
About Artist:
Born circa 1952 Area Utopia, Central Australia Tribe Anmatyerre
Angelina lives with her sisters Kathleen and Polly, and extended family at Camel Camp near Three Bores in Utopia, located 240km North East of Alice Springs. As with her sisters, Angelina began producing batiks in the 1980’s. She also had skills in producing wooden sculptures, influenced by her late husband and the older brother of Cowboy Loy Pwerl, Louis Pwerl. She was formerly known as Angelina Pwerl (her husband’s name). Pwerl in Alyawarr language is the equivalent to Ngal(e) in the Anmatyerr language, and it is as Angelina Ngal(e) that she is referred to today.
Angelina began painting as part of the CAAMA “Summer Project” in 1988 - 1989, and was included in the first exhibition of Utopia women’s paintings held in Alice Springs. Along with her sisters Polly and Kathleen, Angelina is a senior custodian and shares great responsibility as a keeper of the cultural knowledge for their country Arlparra, located in the heart of Utopia. Angelina paints her grandfather’s country “Arlparra”.
