| Evelyn shares the Bush Yam (Antwelarr) story of her late Aunt and highly acclaimed Indigenous artist, Emily Kame Kngwarreye. An important part of the woman's role in traditional Aboriginal culture is to collect bush food. The yams are collected by digging deep into the soil using sharp digging utensils either made from carved wood or more commonly today, a metal crow bar. The Yams are exposed amongst the root system of the yam bush. The yam seeds lay dormant until the rains come, upon which the vines regenerate. The yams are cooked in the hot coals of a fire and are sweet tasting. They are an important food source for the Anmatyerre people. |
