| This painting reflects a traditional Aboriginal ceremony. Ceremonies range from initiation of young adults to Kapuk or the smoking out which is performed to release spirits to the afterworld. These ceremonies are characterised by a singer, a clap stick player, a didgeridoo player and dancers. Helen depicts the ceremony itself through the concentric circles, which signify the singer, those preset at the ceremony and the musicians. Scattered amongst the painting are elongated shapes; the longer ones represent didgeridoos and the smaller ones represent the clapping sticks. Helen's choice of colour represents the land that she comes from. The blue represents the water which surrounds the Daly area, the yellow and green represnt lillies which grow amongst the water, the purple represents the communities and the earth colours show the dry land and the body paint. |
