About Artist:
Artist, Mervyn Franey, a Central Arrernte man from Alice Springs, is an innovative Tangentyere artist whom is now a sought after painter.
Mervyn has had a varied career including working at Tangentyere Council co-ordinating the Land Management section. He is married with four adult children and has two grandchildren. He is concentrating on his painting career.
"I have always been interested in art and used to do lead pencil sketches - portraits, animals, etc. I first started paining in acrylics about ten years ago because all my family members have been painting that way for years. My family is connected with the Yeperenye Dreaming here in Central Australia. I learnt from my family, learnt my cultural stores, whilst developing my own style and transferred this onto canvas.
At the moment my work focuses around presenting my country in Central Australia. I have also got ties in Oodnadatta (Grandfather's country) and Queensland (Father's country)."
Mervyn paints in a very considered way, paying close attention to colours which are appropriate for his country and the season.
