John Lewis Japangardi is a Warlpiri man and son of famous artist and senior law man Paddy Lewis (deceased); he is also brother of the famous Dorothy Napangardi (deceased), Margret Lewis Napangardi, Maggie Watson Napangardi (deceased) and Judy Watson Napangardi (deceased). After having spent the first few years of his life in the bush, his father moved the family to Yuendumu, where he started painting for Warlukurlangu art centre.

John paints traditional Men's Dreaming Stories from his country, Mina Mina, to the west of Yuendumu, which was passed down to him by his father, who was guardian of Mina Mina.
