The Bulgul Collective
The Bulgul Collective is a dynamic and ever-evolving group of artists from the Top End of the Northern Terrirtory. Their work is bold, innovative, and deeply connected to Country - each piece telling a story of cultural heritage, identity, and artistic evolution.
We are incredibly proud to represent these talented artists at Kate Owen Gallery. Their artworks are in high demand, captivating collectors and art lovers alike. Explore the stunning pieces below and scroll down to learn more about this remarkable group of artists.
The Story of the Bulgul Collective
Founded in 2003 with Helen McCarthy Tyalmuty’s first foray into painting, this artistic circle has flourished into a multigenerational movement. It includes artists such as Dianne Tchumut (Litchfield), Camelia Blitner and family (Groote Eylandt), Allen Munggi Stephensen (Darwin), Johanna Wunbirri Gregory (South Australia), and Linda Kilangany Yarrowin and Angelina Manthemarralu Lewis (Belyuen).
Unlike traditional government-funded art centers, this independent collective has built its own creative space - a hub of artistic energy and cultural storytelling. With over 100 exhibitions worldwide, their work has earned widespread recognition and acclaim. The group’s success has inspired new members to join, revitalizing long-dormant careers and contributing to the dynamic evolution of the collective.
What truly sets them apart is its multigenerational mentorship and spirit of collaboration. Younger artists learn by sitting and painting alongside their extended family, absorbing stories, techniques, and creative approaches in a uniquely organic way. Experimentation is encouraged, and innovation thrives in this supportive environment. As a result, a new wave of artists is emerging - producing strikingly refined, abstracted works that showcase remarkable artistic maturity, especially considering many have never had formal art training.
These exceptional pieces never fail to leave an impression. Their art is dynamic, sought-after, and sells quickly. If you’d like to be notified when new works arrive, get in touch with us - these incredible artworks never stay on our walls for long!
