Nangara 30th Anniversary
In 1996, Nangara changed how the world viewed Aboriginal art. Curated by Hank Ebes, this landmark exhibition brought together over 100 Aboriginal artists, showcasing the depth, power, and cultural significance of Aboriginal art. The accompanying two-volume publication, Nangara: The Ebes Collection, helped solidify the importance of these works, introducing them to an international audience and establishing their place in the global art world.
Thirty years on, Nangara returns, not just to revisit these pivotal works, but to reflect on how they continue to shape the contemporary art landscape. The exhibition features many of the original works by artists like Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, and many more, alongside the next generation of Aboriginal artists who have followed in their footsteps.
The groundbreaking dialogue that began in 1996, when these artists entered the global art world not as outsiders, but as equals, has continued to evolve. Today, Indigenous Australian artists are at the forefront of contemporary art, their voices challenging, inspiring, and reshaping the way we think about art, culture, and history.
This exhibition offers a chance to experience these powerful works once again while reflecting on the lasting impact of the 1996 exhibition. It's a celebration of the resilience, innovation, and continued relevance of Aboriginal art in the contemporary world.
